International Law

International law is the set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and between nations. It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations. International law differs from state-based legal systems in that it is primarily applicable to countries rather than to private citizens

International law is a collection of rules which govern the relations between various countries. It lays down guidelines which must be followed by all nations to ensure harmony and peace in the world. It has a full scope and goes beyond war, peace, and diplomacy to include human rights, trade issues, space law, and international organisations.

Although international law is a legal order and not an ethical one, it has been dramatically influenced by ethical principles and morals, especially that of human rights. E sources of international law include international custom (general state practice accepted as law), treaties, and general principles of law recognised by most national legal systems.

It may also be reflected in international comity, which are the practices and customs adopted by states to maintain good relations and mutual recognition, such as saluting the flag of a foreign ship or enforcing a foreign judgment. The International Court of Justice was established by the United Nations to resolve international disputes and conflict between different countries. International law is meant to be neutral and aims to keep a check on the practices of all countries to ensure that they are in accordance with justice and food conscience.

Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice, which is considered authoritative in establishing the sources of international law, describes three principal sources thereof: 1. International treaties and conventions 2. International custom as derived from the "general practice" of states 3. General legal principles "recognised by civilised nations".
