The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 is the main law which protects women from domestic violence. It is a civil law meant primarily for protection, not criminal penalisation. For the first time in Indian law, a definition was coined for the term “domestic violence".

Domestic violence law is primarily meant to provide protection to women who may be married or in a live-in relationship with a male partner. The law also extends its protection to women living in a household with other relatives such as brothers, uncles or in-laws. Much progress has been made in the field of domestic violence law.
